Crazy Martial Art Performance

My parents used to take me to see the Chinese Acrobats and martial art movies ever since I can remember. I grew up on a steady diet of Bruce Lee, anime, seaweed, and rice. Though I wouldn’t consider myself a violent person, I can watch almost any martial arts film without blinking, even as guts are flying. In contrast, I can’t watch your traditional Bond-style action adventure flick without hiding under a blanket the minute guns and bombs go off. Go figure.

The one and only time I recall ever trying anything myself (besides a little tai chi) was when I was ten years old, and my brother asked me to hold still while he practiced placing his high kicks near my head. Guess I should have asked him to practice on something else. That experiment lasted about ten seconds.

I love how martial arts are just that — an art form. Spiritual, emotional, creative, and yet exacting in skill and precision, martial arts are respected, revered, and pursued by adults and children alike. This video is a few years old, but it’s still one of my favorites for inspiration, culture mashup, and just downright engaging entertainment.

Do you participate in a martial art form? How has it changed you? Do you try to modernize your practice with music and dance movements? Would you like to see it taught in American schools as physical fitness classes?

Seattle World Eats Upcoming Schedule

Do you live in Seattle?

Do you like world cuisine? How about world dance?

I created #SeattleWorldEats for Twtvite.com, so locals could find out where I'm dancing, producing world dance shows hosted in restaurants serving exotic food, or catching Hips For Hire branded events around town featuring the world cuisine.

October 24, 2010 A Spooky Belly Dance Show with Pearls of the East at Kalia Indian Cuisine of Greenwood. This is our LAST show of the calendar year, so we tend to pull out all the stops for you. $10 cover fee for this 1hr15min show, plus a cash prize for best Halloween costume. Note: this is our one show that is not considered "family friendly" due to the nature of the music and scary costumes.

October 28, 2010 Magic Carpet Ride For the Cure at PNK Ultra Lounge (Pacific Place Mall, 4th Floor), Seattle, WA. Reza Malayeri and Imei Hsu team up with PNK and Susan G. Komen for an evening of affordable home decor and a raffle, bellydance, and a donated performance from iPad DJ Rana June Sobhany of NYC. Go to our Facebook page, "Magic Carpet Ride" to RSVP, and Eventbrite to register for the raffle drawing.
